When it comes to business cards, everyone is a graphic designer — at least everyone thinks they’re a designer. Perhaps people think that they can’t go wrong on such a small amount of space when in actuality, your small business card makes a huge impact. What you put on it can transform your card from a coaster to a conversion generator.

But what separates the trash from the treasure? The best business card designs are ones that combine simple artistry with the most necessary information. Business cards shouldn’t read like manuscripts, and they shouldn’t look like a Monet painting.

The 2-second rule

A good way to determine if your business card is effective is to enact the 2-second rule. Hand your card to a complete stranger, count to two seconds, then take the card away. Ask your test subject the following questions:

  • What is the name of my business?
  • What do I do (or sell)?
  • Where can you contact me?
  • What was your first reaction when you saw my card?

If your business card was designed well, then your test subject should be able to answer the first three questions while providing you the answer you want to hear for #4. But how can you make that happen in such a small space?

Less is more

Always follow the less-is-more approach with business cards. The amateur designer will want to throw in every single bit of information on a card, including all contact information, services you offer and more. However, you don’t need all of that on your card. In fact, the more information you put on the card, the fewer information people will retain in those pivotal first two seconds.

Use artwork to tell a story

While we all think that the words on a business card are what tell the story, other factors are at play here, as well. Your logo is a crucial aspect of your card and can serve several purposes. Firstly, it’s a way to infuse your branding. Secondly, if your logo was well crafted, then it’ll provide some insight into what it is you actually do or sell. Lastly, your logo will help bring a bit of color and character to your business card.

But logos aren’t the only part of a business card design. You also want to choose your color schemes and font carefully. Let’s take a color choice, for example. What we notice is a lot of IT firms and tech-based companies like silvers and blacks, because of the sleek yet clean look these colors offer. But if you’re a bakery, will those colors work for you? Likely not. You may want to use more earthy tones to attract your potential audience.

Your font will also help you sell your message. Keep in mind that business cards are really small. Typically, you’ll want to avoid serif-based fonts, because the little swirls and frills at the ends of these letters could end up looking fuzzy. You want a clear font that’s easy to read. Remember, some folks have a hard time reading small font.
