What Are Some Ways to Help the Orphans?

There are over 100,000 orphans in Ukraine. They need love and support. But often children are simply sent gifts once a year and they forget about them, believing that they have helped. And this is a big problem of charity in Ukrainian society.

Of course, the material part is important, but it does not help the child prepare for adulthood. Things are easy to get and just as easily lost and broken. Children live on everything ready, do not learn responsibility.

“It’s okay, they will bring it again ” — an attitude towards the gift is formed. After all, there is no model in front of your eyes on how to make money for what you need and take care of what you buy.

Socialization problems

Until the age of majority, the child is served by staff. And often the graduate does not know that the dishes need to be washed by hand, things must be loaded into the washing machine with powder, and the room must be vacuumed and cleaned. He knows more precisely, but only in theory.

Children who have experienced a lot of pain and injustice, have seen violence from birth, dream most of all about a friend, and not about a car or a doll.

It is difficult for children to find a place for themselves in society, so they seek refuge at its very bottom. And one gift a year doesn’t change anything. They do not feel warmth and care when they receive anonymous packages.

How to restore a real, live connection between orphans and citizens outside the walls of the boarding school? There is world experience: the work of adaptation centers in the USA, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany. There are many ministries that help orphans. In Ukraine, you’ll find hopenowusa helping orphans through sponsorship and through different programs and activities.

Research shows that orphans who have gone through adaptation centers separate from orphanages are more successful in integrating into society, creating healthy families and achieving career success.

The more an orphan receives opportunities to become a part of a healthy society from childhood, the more chances that he will be ready for full-fledged adult life after leaving the orphanage.

Mentoring

Children who have experienced a lot of pain and injustice, have seen violence from birth, dream most of all about a friend, and not about a car or a doll. Therefore, mentoring can become one of the powerful engines of the child’s socialization, as it happens in the relationship between parents and children.

Orphans in most cases are unmotivated and lack of initiative, as they are used to living on everything ready and by orders: “go to class”, “go to bed”, “do as they say.”

For instance, a gathering with a grasp of his craft or an activist chief has an invaluable impact on a child. A designer or a programmer, a journalist or an engineer, a businessman, or a teacher — everyone can discuss their business in such a means that the kid needs to do it. You will want to encourage the child by instance to dream and make their goals come true.

Today these children are orphans. But tomorrow they are your neighbors, colleagues, fathers, and mothers.

Help orphans feel like full members of society. Give them your warmth, care, show the real world, help them believe in their own strengths.

And then the graduates of orphanages will be ready for successful adult life, career, and their own happy family.
